Washington College is a private residential liberal arts undergraduate institution with approximately 1,000 students located in historic Chestertown, Maryland, on the banks of the Chester River and within easy reach of Baltimore, Philadelphia, Annapolis, Washington, D.C., and the beaches of Maryland's Eastern Shore. Founded in 1782 with the support of George Washington, the College combines a rich history with a modern liberal arts education centered on exploration, discovery, experiential learning, and close faculty mentorship.
With more than 100 programs of study, Washington College encourages students to be multi-decided—to pursue multiple interests rather than choose just one path. Whether combining majors and minors, exploring interdisciplinary fields, or pairing academic study with internships, research, study abroad, and leadership experiences, students have the flexibility to shape an education that reflects their goals and curiosity. Small classes with an average of 12 students and a 9:1 student-faculty ratio make it easy to build meaningful relationships with professors and engage in discussion-based learning.
Experiential learning begins early and is woven throughout the curriculum. Hands-on learning could include conducting faculty-mentored research at the College's 5,000-acre River and Field Campus, managing a multimillion-dollar investment portfolio, or participating in funded internships and travel opportunities. Every student completes a Senior Capstone Experience that brings together the knowledge and skills developed throughout their entire time at the College.
Support starts on day one. Through the First-Year Seminar, students are paired with faculty advisors and peer mentors while also connecting with the Career Center to begin exploring internships, career pathways, and professional opportunities from their first semester on.
Beyond the classroom, students choose from more than 80 clubs and organizations, NCAA Division III athletics, community engagement opportunities, and waterfront activities including sailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Washington College's close-knit community and picturesque waterfront campus create an environment where students are encouraged to explore widely, build lasting connections, and graduate with both the breadth of a liberal arts education and the practical experience to put it into action.
